Bharti Airtel plans to buy stake in Warid Telecom

Just after two months of a failed acquisition attempt of South Africa's MTN, Bharti Airtel is now planning to buy a controlling stake in Warid Telecom, the fourth largest telecom player in Bangladesh. It plans to purchase the company's 70% stake from Abu Dhabi Group. Bangladesh is an emerging market with mobile density of approximately 33%, and projected user base of 100 million by 2013. Bharti accounts of about 115 million subscriber base which is almost quarter of India's wireless subscribers. Urban telecom density has now reached 100% and revenues and profits of telecos are now under pressure.
